Staff Spotlight: Alison Pearson, Employee Benefits Consultant

With more than 25 years of experience in financial services, Alison Pearson has seen the employee benefits landscape change considerably.

But one thing hasn’t changed – the importance of understanding what people need and how employers can deliver that through a meaningful benefits package.

As Employee Benefits Consultant here at Acumen Employee Benefits, Alison combines more than two decades of experience and insight with a genuine interest in helping businesses create benefits that work for their people.

We caught up with Alison and spoke to her about what she’s learned during her career, what keeps employee benefits interesting after more than two decades, and the four-legged friend who helps her switch off at the end of the day.

If you could give your younger self, just starting out, one piece of career advice, what would it be?

“Stay curious, keep learning and don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone.

“I’d also tell myself to focus my energy on what I can control, rather than worrying about what I can’t. Looking back, some of the most rewarding opportunities (and greatest lessons) have come from challenges I never expected and paths I hadn’t planned.”

Your career has taken you through financial advice, employee benefits and leadership. Which role has shaped the way you work today the most, and why?

“Employee benefits have probably shaped the way I work more than anything else. It brings together technical expertise with a people-first mindset.

“It’s taught me the importance of building strong relationships, listening to different perspectives and always focusing on outcomes that make a real difference for clients and their employees.”

What is it about employee benefits that you’ve found particularly rewarding throughout your career?

“For me, employee benefits are all about people.

“I’m passionate about building strong relationships, understanding what matters to employees and delivering solutions that make a genuine difference. I love helping businesses evolve their benefits as their needs change.

“The industry itself is constantly evolving too, which means there’s always something new to learn.”

After more than 25 years in the industry, what part of your job still surprises you?

“Even though the workplace, and the world around it, has changed considerably, the fundamentals of what people need from their jobs haven’t changed all that much.

“People still want to feel secure, have some flexibility and know that their wellbeing genuinely matters.

“What has changed is how employers respond to those needs. There’s no one-size-fits-all answer and finding the right approach for different businesses and their people is part of what keeps the job so interesting.”

Away from financial services, what’s something you could happily talk about for just as long as employee benefits?

“My dog, Poppy! She’s my wee sidekick and brings me so much joy every day.

“She always makes me smile and reminds me to slow down, appreciate the little things and live in the moment.”

With decades of experience behind her and the same curiosity she’d encourage her younger self to hold onto, Alison brings a thoughtful and considered approach to her work with Acumen Employee Benefits.
